Biography
The biography of Lydia Campbell, a “livyere” or Labrador settler of mixed blood, is considered the first book written by a person from Nunatsiavut. Campbell embarked on this project at the invitation of a pastor from Newfoundland, the Reverend Arthur Charles Waghorne. In 1894, the Evening Herald newspaper in St. John's, Newfoundland published her autobiography as “Sketches of Labrador Life”, in thirteen issues which appeared between December 1894 and May 1895. Campbell tells about her life, but it also describes beliefs and ways of life in Nunatsiavut in the 19th century.
