Author born in Puvirnituq (Nunavik) in 1983.
Joanassie Sivuarapik was born in Puvirnituq in 1983 attending the Iguarsivik School in the village and then leaving for Montréal to pursue post-secondary studies at Cégep Marie-Victorin. Upon his return to Puvirnituq, he has been building a career in the local mining industry.
A literary contest by the Québec publisher of children’s books, Éditions du Soleil de minuit, encouraged new indigenous authors in Nunavik to submit French language stories. Joanassie Sivuarapik submitted his children’s story about a young Inuk on a hunt with his father and it was selected and published as Chasse en qimutsik (2003). In the story, the pair travel by dogsled, construct an igloo and ice fish. This work of juvenile fiction can be found on library reading lists, recommending indigenous stories for children and teachers alike.
